Toronto, ON, August 26, 2015 – POWERADE Canada today announced a 16-month sponsorship deal with rising decathlon star, Damian Warner. The reigning Commonwealth and Pan American champion and Canadian record holder from London, Ontario will join an impressive list of amateur and professional athletes that represent The Coca-Cola Company’s brands internationally. As part of the agreement, Warner will be integrated into key marketing efforts for the brand – including retail activation, experiential events and more.
“Damian is a true inspiration to Canadians and proof that hard work and determination pays off,” says Angie Balian, Vice President of the Still Business Unit at Coca-Cola Ltd. “The decathlon requires an incredible level of athleticism, endurance and agility, and Damian’s ability to power through tough situations makes him the perfect fit for the POWERADE brand.”
Warner quickly became a force on the athletics scene in 2010 when he won silver in the decathlon at the Canadian championships, the very same year that he had taken up the sport. Just two years later, Warner landed an impressive fifth place at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and has since continued to post remarkable results in the challenging decathlon.
“I am thrilled and honoured to join the Coca-Cola family and represent their POWERADE brand,” said Warner. “I have been selective in the corporate partners I have chosen to work with, and the goals and drive of The Coca-Cola Company are in line with mine…to be the best in the world. I also love what the POWERADE brand stands for; that there is potential in all of us, and by powering through whatever stands in our way, we can each realize that potential and achieve our goals. I look forward to a long and rewarding relationship with them.”
POWERADE plans to leverage Warner’s success from the recent Pan American Games in Toronto for upcoming campaigns for the Rio 2016 Olympics and Special Olympics Canada. Warner is a member of Special Olympics Canada’s Champions Network, a collection of well-known and accomplished celebrities who help raise awareness for Special Olympics nationally. Coca-Cola Canada has a longstanding commitment to healthy, active living and is a founding global partner of Special Olympics, helping foster acceptance and inclusion for millions of Special Olympics athletes.
Warner is set to compete this week at the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Beijing and is highly anticipated to make his second Olympic appearance at the Rio 2016 Games, of which
Coca-Cola is a sponsor. POWERADE is the Official Sports Drink of both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games and the Canadian Olympic Team.
