Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay

Toronto, November 21, 2008

The route for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Torch Relay was officially revealed on Nov. 21. As the Olympic Movement’s longest continuous corporate partner, The Coca-Cola Company has seen first-hand the positive impact the Olympics has on athletes, host countries and billions of spectators. For 80 years, Coca-Cola has supported the Olympic values of equality, inspiration and fair competition. The 2010 Relay will be the seventh Olympic Torch Relay the Company has sponsored, and provides the opportunity to share the unique Olympic experience with communities across Canada.

Over 106 days beginning Oct. 30, 2009, 12,000 Canadians will carry the Olympic Torch more than 45,000 km. The Olympic Torch will start its journey in Victoria, BC, travel north through all three Territories and up to the very northern tip of the country, including a

stop in Alert, Nunavut, the northernmost permanently inhabited community in the world, only 900 kilometers from the North Pole!

From there, the Olympic Flame will head eastwards towards Newfoundland before winding its way across the south of the country and back to the west coast for the opening ceremonies in Vancouver on Feb. 12, 2010. In the end, the Olympic Torch will have traveled within a one hour drive of 90 percent of the Canadian population. A truly unifying event, designed to bring all Canadians together.

As a Presenting Partner, Coca-Cola Canada will select a total of 4,500 Torchbearers. These will be Canadians who demonstrate a commitment to embodying the spirit of the Olympic Games and taking positive action around living actively; protecting the environment; and the creation of a more positive reality. The general public can apply through www.icoke.ca and www.sogoactive.com

Through our partnership with ParticipACTION, we created SogoActive to encourage Canadians 13-19 years old to become more active. In addition to discovering the benefits of getting active, youths who participate in SOGO can earn the opportunity to carry the Olympic Flame.

We are also excited to be able to bring the excitement of the Olympic Flame to life through our valued partners. Beginning Dec 29th, we will launch our national Olympic Torch Relay Nomination program and look forward to working with you to bring this unique opportunity to life. We know the vast majority of Canadians think the Olympic Torch Relay will touch and inspire Canadians in a unique and special way. We hope that you will participate with us in our celebration of this incredible journey.

The Olympic Torch Relay is a significant, collective call to active optimism for our country. We encourage Canadians to “Live Olympic on the Coke Side of Life” – to be the spark that ignites a flame of positivity all around. One person can make a difference by embodying the spirit of the Olympics and taking positive action around living actively; protecting the environment, and having large impact on our world.
