This summer Coca-Cola Canada launched the Play a Coke promotion, which builds on the hugely successful Share a Coke program. This revolutionary and interactive campaign connects Coca-Cola fans with 185 unique, shareable moments which unlock specially-curated playlists on Spotify. One of the artists featured in a few of these playlists is Edmonton’s own Ruth B who finds herself at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 with her smash hit “Lost Boy”. She was recently in Toronto performing a Spotify Session live for a handful of lucky fans and agreed to sit down with us to discuss her blossoming music career.

What is your Coca-Cola beverage of choice?

I like a regular Coke but if I can find a Vanilla Coke then that will make me very happy.

Being a relative newcomer to the music industry must give you a unique perspective, especially considering you got your start online, what has the experience been like so far?

It has been really great so far! I’m learning a lot of new things every day and it’s kinda cool to see what the inside of the music business is like.  For the most part it’s been a lot of fun and exciting just getting to learn more about the thing I love the most, which is music.

Your EP “The Intro” dropped last November, how has that changed your life?

That was incredible, is was so fun to get that out there!  Those were the first four songs I’d ever written and so I kind of just wanted to give people a better sense of who I am as a songwriter and as an artist. I produced it myself, wrote it myself and to see people react the way they have has been awesome.

I know you are hoping to release an album sometime this year. How is that coming along?

It is coming along really well, I’ve been working really hard on it. I’ve written all the songs which is great and now I’m getting into the production side of things.  Hopefully it will be out soon, I’m really excited for people to see more of my song writing and my life.

How has touring been going? It hadn’t occurred to me until reading one of your previous interviews that touring has been a new phenomenon for you.  What has it been like getting out there and sharing your songs?

It’s a very new and really cool experience!  It’s been a bit of a culture shock because I got comfortable with having a phone screen in front of me but putting faces in front of me has been a lot of fun. Being able to connect with people in real time has been so great.

Before we wrap up, do you have any advice you’d like to share with aspiring artists out there?

I know the advice that I would have wanted to hear when I was just doing Vine is to do it because you are passionate about it. It can be at any level, doing Vine or playing huge shows, but keep playing music because you love it.

Ruth B can be heard on the “Living the Dream” and “Prom Night” playlists unlocked through specially marked 500 mL Play a Coke bottles.
