With Father’s Day right around the corner, many of us are starting to plan the meals we’ll be preparing for Dad. When I think about my dad’s favourite food, I can’t help but think of the ultimate grill experience—burgers!

In my never-ending quest to jazz up grilled meat, I decided to combine two classics: Coca-Cola and bacon cheeseburgers. This resulted in slightly-sweetened and only mildly spicy candied bacon atop a gooey cheeseburger.

What’s great about the Coca-Cola glaze is that you can pair it with just about any other grill item like roasted corn on the cob, ribs, chicken and pulled pork. (I suggest making a big batch and keeping it stored in the refrigerator to have on hand all summer long.)

Coca-Cola Glazed Bacon Burgers

Serves 4

Brown sugar, packed

1 ½ cups

1 cup

450 g

Burger patties

Cheddar cheese, sliced

Burger buns

Cayenne pepper

A pinch

·       In a medium pot, simmer the brown sugar with the Coca-Cola and a pinch of cayenne pepper for approximately 30-45 minutes or until glaze begins to thicken (stir regularly)

·       Brush glaze onto each slice of raw bacon then cook bacon as you would normally

o   For maximum flavour, continue to baste bacon as it cooks

·       As the glazed bacon cools, it will become candied-like in texture

·       Prepare the burgers to taste adding cheese and your choice of toppings
