This summer, Luminato Festival celebrated its 10th anniversary as North America’s preeminent multi-arts festival, bringing a robust program of performances, visual art experiences, music, theatre, dance and magic to Toronto’s uniquely industrial Hearn Generating Station.
The 16-day festival curated by artistic director, Jorn Weisbrodt, featured countless works of art over 238 events.
For two days during the festival, glacéau smartwater teamed up with monumental, one of Luminato’s most anticipated exhibitions. The contemporary dance performance featured nine dancers from Vancouver’s The Holy Body Tattoo atop illuminated pedestals resembling a miniature city and music from legendary Canadian post-rock collective, Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
“monumental was first brought to my attention the very first year I was with Luminato,” said Luminato Festival Artistic Director, Jorn Weisbrodt. “And it was truly such a monumental work that it took five years to get it here – but believe me when I say it was worth the wait. I don’t think this work looked better anywhere in the world than it did here in Toronto; the steel and concrete maze of the Hearn was like an extension of the set, blowing it up to gigantic dimensions.”
An art installation in itself, the smartwater cloud 6ix lounge hosted VIPs and attendees prior to the monumental performances. Guests of smartwater’s lounge were invited to relax, socialize with fellow Luminato attendees and enjoy a refreshing bottle of smartwater while a canopy of breathtakingly lifelike artificial clouds hovered overhead.
