At Coca-Cola Canada, we continue our journey to become a more helpful and credible partner in the fight against obesity. As part of this journey, we are sharing our second annual update on our financial support of health and well-being related scientific research and partnerships. We have published these updates to our online, searchable database that shows our support from January 1, 2010 through December 31, 2016.
As part of our commitment to transparency we will continue to disclose these updates on an annual basis to ensure that we are sharing the most accurate and current information on our investments in this area.
Below is a summary of our disclosure for this reporting period from January 1, 2016-December 31, 2016:
- Invested $1 million in health and well-being related partnerships, all of which supported our long-term commitment to ParticipACTION.
- $12,500 for academic industry partnerships
- Invested $8,200 to support health and wellbeing research activities
In early 2016 we began to apply new guiding principles to help define how we will provide financial support for well-being related scientific research and partnerships. The new guiding principles serve as our roadmap for well-being scientific research and partnerships. While they do not replace our transparency reporting, we expect there will be fewer activities in the future to report as we continue to implement these new guidelines across our global system.
We also are taking steps to go beyond transparency towards engagement and action. Over the past year we have had discussions with a number of respected Canadian public health professionals and experts. We are continuing these discussions and reviewing the important feedback from these experts as we evolve our business.
Although we are making progress, there is still more work to be done. By working together, we believe business, government and health organizations can pursue solutions to support stronger, healthier communities. We remain committed to that goal.
